Pressure Gauges, Accuracy and Money
Pressure gauges come in many varied ranges, materials of construction, orientation, sizes and accuracies. All things being equal, it is accuracy, or more specifically increased accuracy that will increase the cost of the gauge.
For example: if you have a 2" faced gauge with ¼" NPT male bottom mount connection and the gauge is made with a steel case and brass connection and movement and the gauge is a standard 3-2-3 gauge (3% accurate in the first third of the reading range, 2% in the second third and 3% in the last third) and I have one that is identical, but is 2% accurate over the full scale range, mine will be more expensive.
You can think of accuracy like horsepower in a car. The more you have, the better you feel, but the more expensive the car is. The analogy is also true in that you pay for all the horsepower a car can produce, even if you don't use it. The same is true with pressure gauges. You pay for all the accuracy the gauge has whether you need that accuracy or not.
A good rule of thumb when specifying a pressure gauge is to find the least expensive gauge that meets your application requirement with an acceptable safety margin. Why buy a gauge that is 1.5% accurate when on that is 2% will do the job just fine? The answer is there is no reason whatsoever to do it.
In these times, being competitive is more important than ever. Every dollar you save on manufacturing your product is a dollar that goes either directly to your bottom line, or allows you to reduce your selling price and still make the same margin. Simply, why buy a $75 gauge when a $25 one will do the job.
Another way to save money on your product is to buy generic pressure gauges. Remember, assuming all other specifications are the same, you are buying accuracy. If you need a 2% accurate gauge and a name brand X gauge is $150 and a no name gauge that is also 2% accurate is $110. Why not save the $40? Again this goes to your bottom line.
There is another advantage to OEM's in using non name brand gauge suppliers. They will often put your logo on the face of the gauge. This will not only lower your cost but increase the "Q" rating of your company.
In summary, when buying a pressure gauge, you are paying for accuracy. 2% is 2% is 2%. Save money and buy the least expensive one that still give you the accuracy required by the application.
