Motorcycle Touring And The Long Haul
Large motorcycle bags or luggage heavily loaded can be a problem when trying to safely secure to a motorcycle. T-Bags and other designs that use an elastic type material to secure luggage or bags to the sissybar may allow the shifting of your luggage especially when buffeted by backwash at higher speeds. (Warning: Never exceed the maximum weight of luggage and passenger as recorded in your motorcycle manual)
Friction rub can occur when luggage is allowed to rest on a fender or other painted surfaces. Paint jobs can be expensive and dulling of the paint surface is too much of a price to pay for hauling your gear.
One must pack in such a way that when using soft luggage or bags as a backrest, hard items are not making contact with the rider or passenger’s back. Removing these items during short stops means having to reposition items in the bag or luggage each time. Hard luggage is a poor excuse for a back rest.
Bungees are usually trial and error when trying to secure luggage securely. Short rest stops and such means leaving your luggage with possibly valuable items in unsecure areas. Having to unfasten and refasten bungees during these brief stops is not the freedom expected when you’re an easy rider.
Some expensive luggage racks can be removed with simple tools. Removing these racks is not practical when entering your lodging for the night.
Consider the CyclePac:
The CyclePac ( is a more secure system for transporting motorcycle luggage or bags. There is no need to bungee up and risk shifting due to vibration or wind buffeting. Two quick release buckles allows the luggage with all of its contents to be removed from the CyclePac bracket or the bracket and luggage or bag can be removed as a unit and safely secured in your lodging. Motorcycle Touring and The Long Haul The problem with touring on a motorcycle if the trip will involve several days or even a long weekend is the amount of gear that one would like to take for comfort sake. Riding double means twice the stuff that makes life a little more enjoyable. Removing these racks is not practical when entering your lodging for the night. Consider the CyclePac: The CyclePac (Model Sissybar) replaces your existing sissybar if you have sideplates that allows for the removal of the sissybar (usually four bolts). Once the CyclePac’s steel sissybar adapter is inserted into the sideplates and secured, there is no drift due to wind resistance or vibration. The CyclePac bag or luggage of your choice is supported by four stainless steel swing arms. Two nylon straps with quick release buckles secures the CyclePac bag or luggage. Larger bags or luggage in height or girth are equally secure during those long extended rides including backpacks. There is a luggage support extending from the bottom of the CyclePac bracket that supports your luggage and prevents contact with the rear fender. The CyclePac has its own padded backrest so the contents of the bag do not make contact with the rider or passengers back. The two quick release buckles allows the CyclePac bag to be removed from the bracket. Once removed the bag is carried by a handle for those stops were your motorcycle may be out of sight. The CyclePac bag and bracket can be released from the sissybar adaptor by simply removing one bolt. In this way the bag and bracket can be removed as a unit and secured in your lodging. No need to remove the bag from the CyclePac to locate items. The bag is top loading. There are also two map pockets and a cell phone pouch. Once you have arrived at your destination, you have the option of either replacing your sissybar, which could be stored in the CyclePac bag or luggage, or disconnecting the CyclePac bracket from the CyclePac sissybar adaptor and using the adapter as a low riding in appearance sissybar. The CyclePac bag comes with a removable inner stiffener to keep its form when not fully loaded. There is an optional rain and snow cover that is stored in a pouch. There is a CyclePac (Model Corbin). Corbin, one of the largest after market leather motorcycle seat manufacturer offers models that incorporate a removable backrest that inserts into a steel sleeve fabricated within the seat. The CyclePac (Model Corbin) is designed with a steel shaft that is inserted into the Corbin seat once the backrest is removed. The model has all of the same advantages as the Model Sissybar but the sissybar adapter is not required.">Model Sissybar) replaces your existing sissybar if you have sideplates that allows for the removal of the sissybar (usually four bolts).
