Fork Oil
How to check fork oil level. 72 yamaha xs 650?

I need to fill my forks and don't know how full to fill them. Anyone know the proper level and how to check? I have the caps off the tree right now and they look dry as far as I can see down.

Fork oils come in different viscosity's. The higher the viscosity the stiffer your front forks will be. There should be a drain plug on the back of each lower leg at the bottom. Pull these plugs and let the forks drain. You can put the top caps back in loosely and, while holding the front brake, pump the forks up and down. This will help get all of the oil out but can be messy, so be aware. Put the drain plugs back in, being care full not to strip the threads, and fill the forks with the required amount of oil through the top of the fork. Easy says 223 cc's which sounds about right, check the web site he quoted or call a dealer. I would start out with 10 weight oil, unless you are a big guy, and see how it rides. If the front forks feel mushy go to a heavier oil, fork oil is cheap.
