I got an orchid as a gift and the stick like thing growing out of the top is dead. What do I do?

The rest of the plant is green and looks healthy. It had flowers on it but they wilted and died. Then the stick like thing turned yellow. Do I need to cut it off? Please help.

That is the flower stem and sheath. No harm cutting it off.
